Cider Central

Hard cider has grown in popularity over the last several years. Find out why at the Grand Tastings at the Mendocino County Fair and Apple Show, where you can sample the top-placing ciders of the California Cider Competition. Talk to cider makers about what goes into a good batch of the hard stuff. And then check out the rest of the fair's offerings, which include a rodeo, sheep dog trials, a classic car show, and apple and wine tastings. The fair will be held September 14-16, 9 a.m.-midnight, at the Mendocino County Fairgrounds in Boonville. Cider tastings will be held September 15 and 16, noon-4 p.m. Fair admission is $6-$10 (extra fee for cider and wine tastings); ages 6 and under get in free every day. On September 14 only, children ages 12 and under receive free admission. See mendocountyfair.com for details.
