Great Balls of Fire

Every year, the sky dazzles with orbs and streams of light--the Perseid meteor shower. Lucky for us, it's best viewed in the Northern Hemisphere. Meteors first appear in mid July and peak in mid August, when it's possible to see 60 or more an hour. Poise yourself for peak viewing on August 12 at 8 p.m. at the Perseid meteor shower and astronomy night campout on the property of Mendocino Magic in Laytonville. Hike one-and-a-half miles to the campsite, then peer through a telescope and listen to talks by astronomers. When evening's done, hunker down in your sleeping bag and watch the sky, as you ready for sleep under the stars. The event is $45 per person; no tents allowed. Find out more at mendocinomagic.com.
