Frequently Asked Questions

Who can participate?
Everyone! We have programs for babies, toddlers, children, teens, and adults. Even if your child is too young to read by themselves you can sign up and read with them!

How do I sign up?
Sign-Ups Begin May 20th. At that time you can sign up at any branch of the Lake County Library.

How does it work?

Pre-readers and Kids:
When you sign up you can pick up a reading log at your local branch library and start reading library books. Library staff will log reading when you return them to the front desk in the library. For every page you read you get 1 reading point, but for really short books that are less than 40 pages we will round up to 40 points. For every 200 reading points you get a sticker for your reading log. At 1,000 points you earn the completed badge and the Friends of the Library will donate a book to the library with your name inside the book commemorating your achievement at the end of the program!

Teens and Adults:
After you sign up online you can start reading library books. Enter what you read online to get credit. For every 200 pages you read you win an entry for the grand prize drawing (up to 5 entries total). If you read at least 1,000 pages the Friends of the Library will donate a book to the library with your name inside the book commemorating your achievement! Watch for Summer Reading related events in the library newsletter to participate in all summer long.

What if I don’t have an email address?
If you are a teen or adult signing up online and don’t have an email address you can get an email address for free online from websites like Gmail, Outlook.com, or Yahoo Mail.

Do I need a library card?
If you are a child and you don’t have a library card but someone in your family checks books out for you, you can use their card to sign up.  For adults, if you don’t have a card, it’s easy to get one: just bring your photo ID to your nearest library branch.

What if I don’t usually use the internet?
For children the whole program can be done without the internet. For teens and adults, library staff can help. Just visit the circulation desk when returning your books so library staff can log your reading.

Can I read eBooks or listen to audiobooks?
Yes! When entering eBooks or audiobooks on your reading log estimate the number of pages by looking up a print copy—ask library staff if you need help.

My child isn't 5 yet but can read by themselves, can they sign up as a Kid?
Yes! The Kids program is for independent readers, so if your child can read mostly by themselves go ahead and sign up as a Kid.

What else is going on during the summer at the library?
Check out the library calendar to see all the events that are happening at your local branch over the summer.

What if I have more questions?
Be sure to contact the library either online, over the phone, or by visiting your local branch.
