Abalone-diving season was canceled this year due to dwindling abalone populations. But you can still devour locally and sustainably grown versions of this sea snail at the Abalone Cook Festival and Cook-Off, where chefs from around the world will compete. The event aims to raise money to eradicate the growing sea urchin population that is competing for the abalone's food: kelp, which is dying off thanks to changing ocean temperatures. Each $110 ticket gets participants 7-10 tastings and the chance to vote on their favorite abalone dish. Dig in on August 11, 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m., at South Noyo Harbor in Fort Bragg. Tickets may be purchased at brownpapertickets.com.
